Good Agricultural Practices

Beneficial Plants

The cultivation of beneficial plants aims to control oil palm pests, particularly bagworms and nettle caterpillars.

This practice is part of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, which reduces reliance on chemical usage.

Using Owls for Rat Control

One of the causes of yield loss in oil palm plantations is rat attacks on palm fruit bunches. In addition to chemical poisons, a biological control initiative has been implemented by utilizing owls (Tyto alba) through the construction of owl houses in FELCRA Berhad’s oil palm plantations.

Use of Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB)

The use of Empty Fruit Bunches as mulch is an excellent alternative because they contain nutrients, particularly high levels of potassium, as well as some phosphate and magnesium. Additionally, EFB increases organic content, improving soil fertility.

Leguminous Cover Crops

Leguminous cover crops are planted in oil palm areas during the pre-maturity stage to enhance soil fertility, reduce soil erosion caused by rain, and preserve the environment.

Replanting (Zero Burning)

Replanting activities comply with the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) principles, avoiding open burning.
