ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS

As a conglomerate operating in the plantation industry, FELCRA Berhad is committed to ensuring that all operational units are managed responsibly with regard to the well-being and preservation of the environment and biodiversity. To ensure the protection of the environment and biodiversity, we are committed to:

Managing environmental impacts – reducing the environmental impact in plantation practices such as the prohibition of open burning, reducing pollution, and conserving water resources.

Management of areas with high conservation value (HCV) – preserving the functions of HCV and protecting endangered species (RTE).

Waste management – managing and reducing operational waste while promoting recycling practices.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions – reducing GHG emissions through sustainable approaches.

BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT

To realize the biodiversity pilot project at FELCRA Berhad, the Sustainability Group organized a study visit to Sime Darby, Carey Island, on September 24, 2020. The visit was attended by several officers managing biodiversity projects at FELCRA Berhad. This visit allowed FELCRA Berhad to gain more insights into the biodiversity management practices implemented by Sime Darby. Additionally, it provided exposure and extensive knowledge regarding sustainability practices adopted by other companies.

BUFFER ZONE

To ensure the implementation of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) Certification at FELCRA Berhad according to the established guidelines, FELCRA Berhad has taken several proactive steps in environmental preservation, including the maintenance of buffer zones. Areas with rivers that are gazetted will implement control measures for buffer zones, where the use of chemicals and fertilizers will be prohibited, and the buffer zones will be preserved naturally. Additionally, training related to buffer zones will be provided to the Plantation Workers (TKL) in all involved areas.

RIVER WATER MANAGEMENT

The water management plan plays a crucial role in monitoring the quality of river water and detecting any significant changes in water quality due to environmental pollution over time. One of the elements in water management is conducting water quality analysis of rivers in FELCRA Berhad’s areas/estates. In this context, the reports obtained from the water sampling analysis must comply with the National Water Quality Standards. Some of the parameters analyzed include pH, Temperature, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Ammoniacal Nitrogen (AN), Turbidity, Phosphorus, Oil & Grease, E-coli, Arsenic, Paraquat, and Glyphosate. The implementation of buffer zones in river areas helps control water pollution, along with the prohibition of chemical pesticides and fertilizers in those buffer zones.
